Base (bis) is a well-graded blend of crushed sand and gravel used as the load-bearing base and sub-base layer under roads, yards and slabs. It combines the fractions produced at Nangerd into a continuous grading that compacts to a dense, stable layer. Made from crushed andesite, it is strong and durable; keeping the very fine material controlled is what gives a clean, high-quality base.
What Base Is
Base is not a single size but a continuous grading — sand through gravel in controlled proportions — engineered so that the particles pack tightly and lock together when compacted. That density and interlock give the layer its bearing strength and stability. At Nangerd the base is blended from the crushed sand and gravel fractions, with the fine material controlled so the mix stays clean and well-graded.
Applications
- Road base and sub-base
- Foundation and working platform layers
- Base under yards, hardstanding and slabs
- Structural backfill and general fill
Quality Requirements
A good base is well-graded and clean, with durable aggregate and controlled fines so it compacts to a high density and stays stable under load. The aggregate should be sound and resistant to abrasion and freeze–thaw, and the fines should be low in plasticity. Nangerd supplies base against the grading and compaction requirements named in each project.
