Pea Gravel

Pea Gravel

Pea gravel (nokhodi).

Pea gravel — nokhodi — is the 6 to 12 mm crushed fraction of Nangerd andesite. It is the small coarse aggregate used where a fine, well-graded stone is needed: concrete, drainage and filter layers, and precast work. Crushed from hard andesite, the particles are angular, strong and low in absorption.

Applications

  • Small coarse aggregate for concrete
  • Drainage and filter layers
  • Precast and exposed-aggregate concrete
  • Pipe bedding and surround
  • Fine asphalt mixes

Quality Requirements

Like all aggregate for concrete, pea gravel must be clean and durable: free of clay, silt, gypsum and sulfates, sound and not friable, and resistant to freeze–thaw, abrasion and impact. Its angular, crushed shape improves interlock and mechanical bond in concrete. Nangerd controls gradation and cleanliness by screening.
