Ballast, gravel and crushed stone: the differences

Three descriptions at different levels

Ballast describes a railway function and a specified product. Gravel can describe a particle-size group or a locally named aggregate product. Crushed stone describes material produced by breaking rock. The categories overlap: compliant ballast may be crushed stone, while many crushed-stone products are not suitable railway ballast.

Compare specifications, not appearance

Similar colour or nominal size does not establish interchangeability. Compare sieve results, particle shape, cleanliness, strength and durability against the requirements of the intended layer. Natural and crushed aggregates have many applications, each with its own criteria. A source-rock name or a photograph cannot replace representative sampling and relevant test evidence.
