Why a railway needs ballast

In conventional ballasted track, rails are supported by sleepers, not by a random pile of stones directly beneath each wheel. The ballast below and around the sleepers helps distribute loads, restrain movement and provide a maintainable support system. Open spaces between clean particles also form part of the drainage path.

Why stones do not solve every track problem

Drainage needs an outlet, and the supporting ground must be suitable. Clean stone alone cannot repair a weak formation or a blocked drain. Angular crushed particles and an appropriate grading are important, but particle durability, cleanliness, construction and maintenance must also be assessed. Slab track uses a different structural arrangement to meet related functional needs.
